As the name of the wine indicates, “Primeiras Vinhas” is the result of grapes from a plot planted more than 40 years ago.
This plot has excellent sun exposure and its name, “Soalheiro”, derives from there and ended up giving the name to the brand in 1982.
This wine shows an elegant structure and complexity uncommon in Monção and Melgaço, using old vines to create a new expression of the region's potential to make great wines.
Terroir: Our First Vineyards are next to the winery, in one of the areas with the best sun exposure in the parish of Alvaredo.
The valley where it is located, protected to the north and south by mountains and sufficiently inland to escape the marked Atlantic influence, has a particular microclimate: here the temperature, the amount of rain and the number of hours of sunshine provide the ideal conditions for the best maturation of Alvarinho.
Vinification: The grapes are hand-picked from vines over 40 years old. Fermentation takes place mainly in stainless steel, with 15% of the total volume fermented in used oak barrels, thus giving the wine greater complexity.
According to the winemaker, "the philosophy is to keep the wine in contact with the lees through the bâtonnage, giving it a greater structure and a different character from most other wines in the Vinho Verde region". The wine ages for 6 months before bottling.
