Ana Paula Lopes and Inácio Loureiro are two Portuguese sommeliers who, at the age of 50, decided to leave the restaurant scene to younger people and change their lives. Their professional lives took them to travel to the most important wine regions in the world and taste the best that is made there. Of the thousands of bottles they have opened, the wines of the Dão region have always enchanted them with their subtlety, elegance and freshness, which, even when they are already quite old, they consider comparable to the great wines of Burgundy.
In 2019, they decided to move from Lisbon to this part of the country that they are so passionate about. They took over a small farm in the mountainous area of the Alva sub-region, and with their skills, they started their own wine tourism business to continue doing what they had always loved.
Quinta da Aldeia Nova has 3 hectares of stony clay-limestone soils predominantly made of ferruginous quartz, sandstone and pebbles, at altitudes ranging from 200 to 400 metres between the Açor, Estrela and Lousã mountain ranges.
The idea is to create wines similar to the great Dão wines of the past, pure, light and true wines, conceived with great respect for nature and the consumer. The vineyards are worked by Inácio in a natural way, with the application of practices that strengthen the balance of the ecosystem. Several grape varieties from the region where Baga and Encruzado predominate were planted. The vinifications are low intervention, with spontaneous fermentations, little technology and without the addition of oenological products, made in a precise and careful way with the assistance of the consulting oenologist Carlos Raposo. The result is wines that smell of wine, that splash with energy, but with a structure that is always balanced.
